I like Cathy Yardley's writing, but as of 33 pages in, I knew I couldn't stand the protagonists. Their concerns are just fundamentally not relatable for me. "I have 5 million YouTube subscribers but I want 6 million! I have multiple brand deals, but they aren't not expensive enough brands! I have a large group of friends but the popular kids I barely know don't want to hang out with me!"

LOVED LOVED LOVED this book. I loved the characters. I loved the plot. I loved how lilly and Tobin reconnected after a few yrs. I loved how they liked each other in high school but didn't express it until later on after highschool. I would recommend for sure. it made me laugh out. I love books that do that.

This was adorable! I feel like normally the gender roles are reversed in plots like this, so it was refreshing in terms of a modern romance.

to quote this book “i wanted to yeet him into the sun”. just replace “him” with “this book” and it sums everything up quite nicely. 2.

I usually love Yardley's geek-flavored romances. But this one fell rather flat for me, in large part because I didn't care for either of the main characters, or believe in their romance. Former high school frenemies, both are now, at 28, You-Tube rising stars, Lily a Beauty influencer, Tobin a gamer and prankster. Lily, organized, controlled, and hard working, always wanted to be a part of the popular crowd in high school, rather than a default member of the "Nerd Herd" to which she's always felt consigned. And though she doesn't seem to recognize it, she's partially using her Beauty advice channel to show those popular high school kids that she can be popular, too. In contrast, Tobin's an improvising, fly-by-the-seat-of-his-pants ADHD college drop-out who has monitized his puckish personality and behavior through his You-Tube and Twitch channels. After not interacting much since high school, the two reluctantly get back together in hopes of jumpstarting their creativity-flagging channels by collaborating with one another on a few joint videos. And find each other hot.

Not that fond of the whole "beauty" industry, or the idea of "influencers" (ultimately they feel like shills selling product to me, no matter how nice they are or how good their intentions), so Lily as a character didn't appeal to me. And while I didn't care for the way Tobin's parents treated his work as if it was just a game, I have to admit I did share some of their concerns about his long-term career prospects...

The most disappointing part, though, was the romance. Lily and Tobin are VERY different, personality-wise, and I had a hard time seeing how they were going to make a relationship work. I could just picture what Lily does to Tobin in the Black Moment happening over and over again in the future...
