The language is thick and difficult at times, but I appreciated this story for what it was: a historical insight into perspectives on racism. I appreciated the POV of Captain Delano, supposed a benevolent, genial captain who "takes to to blacks like some men to Newfoundland dogs" (I'm quoting from what I remember here). It's remarkable that the subtle racism is what makes the plot function, and it was a good story to dig into in class.

despite this keeping my interest far more than moby dick did (although that's not very hard to do), i still find melville's writing to be quite clinical, and constantly found myself falling asleep while reading this.
what is really amazing in this book is that for 60 pages you are either trying to understand what's going on on that stange ship or you are asking yourself why captain Delano is such a stupid person! and, in both cases, you are so involved in the book that you didn't even notice when you get to the turning point and at the end you are too shocked to even try to think clearly! I think this book is a piece of literature that deserve to be read, moreover because it shows how many sides any situation has and, at the end, make you think about slavery, justice and freedom
well this would’ve gotten one star but the ending was much more interesting to read so it got itself a higher rating.
Maybe this book could’ve been good if I had read it with a deeper affinity for understanding it. Ms. Rollins class made it seem more interesting yet stylistically and how slow it moved until suddenly everything happened at once made it impossible to follow and enjoy for me.

2.5? So many commas, so many clauses! I think it’s good, it’s just so aware of its masculinity and Melville is too
