Un racconto ricco di tensione, con tratti onirici, ed anche, a mio parere, un certo umorismo di sfondo.
Il protagonista, capisce solo alla fine se la situazione in cui si trova sia effettivamente di pericolo oppure no. Le stranezze della nave in cui è "ospite" per un giorno, sono un'effettiva minaccia per lui?
Qual è il mistero che si cela dietro allo strano comportamento del capitano Benito Cereno?

Il finale non mi è piaciuto, non tanto per la "soluzione" in sè, che anzi rende nel complesso affascinante e forse degno di una rilettura tutta la storia, ma per il modo in cui è narrata.

Writing is heavy on atmosphere and has an unreliable narrator. Not my cup of tea.

Once again, I found myself drowning in Melville. His dense prose so suffocating and impossible that you flounder in the tsunamis of descriptions. This was better than Moby Dick though in storytelling. It manages to concoct a weighty Gothic atmosphere with infinite uses of the word “gray” and also shroud its narrative in oblivion and mystery. There are interesting and disputed themes about the racism of the tale that are told in an intriguing balance between historical and added metaphor. Which, regardless of your personal perspective on it, can be a bit useful to ponder and weigh, especially in terms of its original versus its modern acceptance. Despite everything, it’s not that “fun” a read and I would warn you to pack a decent number of life jackets for yourself before tackling this piece.

Magari non ho capito niente di questo libro, ma l'ho trovato intollerabile. Probabilmente l'autore pensava che avrei dovuto tenere per Don Benito e il capitan Delano, ma ho fatto tutto il tempo il tifo per gli schiavi, pur sapendo che non avrebbero mai potuto farcela.
