Interesting story with a ton of tension, but I HATED Melville’s writing. How many commas can one put in a single sentence? Some parts went completely over my head because of his pretentious language. It’s quite the example of an unreliable narrator, though. I found myself asking: Is this a straight-up racist story or a critique of slavery? I can’t really tell.

The final paragraph calls into question, for me, Melville’s intention in writing this slaver narrative. A necessary read nonetheless
An excellent example of unreliable narrators, and one of the many great works that still has people arguing whether or not its racist (it definitely isn't but the fact that people argue about it is apart of what makes it great)

Melville è un genio e questo ne è un esempio straordinario. Non a torto la descrizione di questa edizione BUR - che offre anche un'ottima postfazione critica - parla di una "sapienza millimetrica" e di "un'allucinata potenza creativa". Il dettaglio infatti è curato con una precisione e un'intensità impressionanti, specialmente alla luce di una rilettura già a conoscenza dei parallelismi tra realtà e apparenza in atto, i quali risultano congegnati con una finezza incredibile.

It would be impossible to properly review this odd novella without being a Melville scholar or one of his readers at the time it was actually published. Suffice it to say, the ornate prose and innate racism in the story make it difficult to sympathize with the profound blindness of the narrator or the simple, two dimensional suffering of the protagonist. Interesting as a document of a ship bound slave revolt, yet it can’t be described as an entertainment, nor a particularly important addition to American literature.
I absolutely prefer Melville' short stories compared to the whale! In this one everything happened on a ship and the plot is easy but still quite impressive. Remarkable.
