This one came out of left field as an audible treat. It felt liked an extended 'theory of mind' excercise with a historical backdrop of colonialism and the transatlantic slavetrade. Will sure read more by Melville, it’s been too long since I read the white whale saga.

Highly disturbing. Some of the images are incredibly vivid, but the unwritten ones, the ones that Melville leads the readers to imagine for themselves, are even worse. I loved it, after I finished it-in the beginning it's hard to get into, but after Melville drops the first few clues, it starts to get really interesting. There's a surprise ending that I won't spoil here, but if you pay attention it's fairly easy to guess. After you finish reading it, I would recommend reading it again, and piecing together all of the clues that you missed in the first place. I got shivers, and walked around for a few hours feeling creepy. In the "wow, I just read an amazing piece of disturbing literature" way, of course. Melville tends to be a little long-winded, taking a long time to say a little, but don't let that throw you off. It's worth the time.

Hated this for so many reasons. Would not recommend to my worst enemy.

Read for my Literary Investigations class.

The only Melville that I ever truly enjoyed.

The "shocking" plot twist was easily guessed at the outset, and the prose were somewhat laborious. A whole section of the book is a transcript of a legal deposition, which is exactly as much fun as that sounds. Though I enjoyed the nautical setting, the rest of the story was not much better.

this book was so dense and lowkey (highkey) boring for majority of the story. the sentences are so freaking long that it's practically impossible to enjoy. i appreciate the anti-slavery view (hence my extra star), however, i probably wouldn't have picked up on it if i wasn't told about it. honestly, my professor makes every book sound better than it actually is, so her analysis of this story is definitely influencing my rating but i love my professor so i don't care
slow-paced

I am fully aware that Herman Melville is a classic author, but this was a torture for me and if I didn't have to read it for school, I would give up on it.

The story itself is interesting and quite inspiring as well, but it would help a lot if the average sentence wouldn't be half a page long.
English also isn't my first language, so that was a bit of a struggle as well, since I had difficulty understanding some words or even sentences (but for this, I mainly blame the lack of attention because I was just falling asleep all the time)

Anyway, it is a good story, just very boringly written (imho) and I am not a fan.

Good twist but overall hard to finish.
