Adulthood Rites

Octavia E. Butler

4.16 AVERAGE

I only give this one 4 stars because it is clearly a middle book of the trilogy. Not a lot happens outside of learning about Akin, the first male Oankali-Human construct. It takes a long time to get to the point, and most if it is Akin discovering his heritage, and how he can help future Humans. There's a lot more talking and discussion, and not a whole lot of action outside of some Humans raiding each other's villages.

If you were enamored with all the crazy shit that happens in Dawn, you might be disappointed that it's not as exciting in the sequel. But Adulthood Rites is true to Butler's style, with humans being horrible to each other and hindering their own progress. I love her writing, and there's a reason I can read her books in a couple of days. It flows like wine, wrapping you in sensations and emotions you didn't even know you could feel. Her writing is an addiction, just as the Humans are addicted to the Oankali. She's talking about horrible, strange things, but you can't help but read on. Drawn by the irresistible tug of "What's going to happen now??"

I was blown away by this trilogy. I thought the first book was good, and it just gets better and better. I usually read a lot of dystopia when it comes to science fiction, and this was refreshing in a way, more hopeful, yet extremely complex. I loved reading about aliens.
