3.5 stars / the first and last parts were the best of the book in my opinion. i personally did not connect with akin’s character, so i found him to be a bit boring (personality wise). however, points bc i love the theme of this series. i wish that the whole book had the same feel as part 4, i think i would have liked it more than i did ☹️

BUTLER DOES IT AGAIN!!! I mean really, she writes stories that are unlike any other. Such a fascinating alien culture with the Oankali, paired with incredible thought-provoking questions about human nature, biology, and genetics.

A good sequel, a story I wasn't quite expecting but enjoyed almost as much as I did the first book
4.5*. This trilogy is really amazing. particularly, the intricately detailed alien physiology and culture. The Oankali collect life, travel and integrate new life. Basically, they merge species at the DNA level, using alien-human procreation/chemical bonding through the gender neutral Oolai. They are the interface between the human and Oankali species as they "trade" genes to achieve xenogenesis . Although Oankali have rescued the remnants of humanity after a nuclear war extinction event, there is significant human resistance to the end of humanity through the Oankali constructs. This book does a great job exploring that issue.
