I'm so wrapped up in the characters and the future of the human race from the first book in this series that it is difficult to evaluate it separately. However, I have begun to tire of every human or oankali apparently being driven entirely by their need to mate and reproduce.
Butler is supposed to be a feminist and yet most (all?) her female characters spend their time defined by their partners , offspring, or inability to produce offspring. Compared to another of my favorites, Ursula Le Guin, Butler spends a lot of time defining strict gender roles even for her gender less ooloi.
Still I find the book stimulating, thought provoking, and I blew through it in just a few days. So four stars.
