A real adventure book with themes of conservation and climate change with a superb main character. And a polar bear. Really enjoyed this and the way the plot unfolded and the characters developed. I also loved the hopeful ending rather than dystopian feel which is sometimes the case in climate action books.

Very cute and I loved April’s voice and determination. Also appreciated that it wasn’t just a straight-up triumph of a lone child saving the world and instead acknowledged that the issues are larger than can be solved by any individual, let alone a kid. I think the parts that mentioned how “even everyone doing something to help wouldn’t be enough to fix climate change” should have elaborated on the fact that we need systemic changes. Kids aren’t stupid - they’d understand a story that involved mentions of changes needed to laws to stop the biggest offenders continuing to make things worse. Otherwise, it puts a lot of pressure on the kids to fix everything instead of just inspiring them to aim for a better world. There’s a difference between “you have a voice, use it to demand change” and “you can help fix climate change by your individual actions”.

This book felt exactly how I imagine the hug of a big fluffy friendly bear would feel!
Soft and clear, the narrative went on flawlessly and the positive vibes emanated from the strong little girl can make the reader feel like a better person altogether. Little April goes on and beyond for her peculiar friend and I am sure their adventures will be told to many generations of polar bears from now.

The Last Bear is well written and beautiful adventure story of friendship, nature, animals, and an important message on climate change. It’s never too early to be showing children how much care our planet requires. I loved the descriptive way in which the author told of April’s adventures on Bear Island. I was intrigued by the location, Svalbard and it is a place I would love to visit although health wise, I’d never cope with the extreme weather!
The story, is beautiful and with its extremely important message had me in tears at a few points. It is such a lovely story and I have recommended this to everyone.
I listened to the audiobook of The Last Bear, read by Helen Phillips and published by Harper Collins Childrens Books. I borrowed this from my local library using the Borrow Box app. I enjoy listening to audiobooks while crafting and it is brilliant that the libraries now have the ability to use an app to borrow audiobooks. I highly recommend anyone who enjoys audiobooks to check out which app their local library uses.
This should be an essential read for all children and I hope it can be added to reading lists. Come on, booksellers give this book all the hype it deserves and get this book into every household.
After listening to the audiobook I purchased a signed edition of the book for my ‘keepsakes’ bookshelf so I could enjoy reading the story again and again. However, it didn’t even make it to the bookshelf before it was borrowed by my niece!

I was not prepared to be so invested in a) a child's book, or b) a book about polar polars ... But blimey. What an exquisitely beautiful and well-written novel (oh the vocabulary❤️). If my class doesn't love it as much as I, I will be crushed. Watched this space.
