I read this to my class of 7 and 8 year olds and they really enjoyed it.
Bavilo. Doporučuji.

I was given this book because of my love for polar bears. I was very excited to start reading this. It follows a girl who has temporarily moved to Bear Island with her dad for work. There are no polar bears on Bear Island due to the ice caps melting, but April finds one. A skinny, weak, starving polar bear. She looks after this bear, names him bear and nurses him back to health. Bear tells her in his bear way that he is alone on bear island because his mom took him to find food with her and there wasn’t enough food so she chose to feed him rather than her and she died. Then the ice caps melted. April finds a way to take bear to the neighbouring island which has loads of polar bears on. In doing this, she sails out in the middle of the night with bear until her boat gets taken over by the waves and it all goes black. When she awakes, she has been saved by humans and bear is tied up. When April went down, bear held her safely in his mouth and tried to save her. The humans thought he was trying to eat her. She manages to convince and persuade them that her and bear are friends and she told them her plan. They take bear to the island where he wonders off and lives happily ever after with the polar bears.
This book is a very good book for children as it is really educational about the realities of global warming. It makes you empathise with the animals that are suffering. Hannah Gold has also written books about other endangered animals and I think her way of telling children about these animals and about the devastation that is happening to their homes, and what everyone can do to help, is really good. I’d recommend this author to anyone with children or someone who is enthusiastic about global warming, and I will tell others the story who maybe don’t have children or worry too much about global warming.
There was a moment in the middle of the book where it started to feel like it was being slightly dragged out a little bit and there wasn’t much happening. Come to the end of the book, it really catches you and makes you want to find out what happens. For that reason, I will rate this book slightly lower than I would like to.

Read this after rewatching Herzog's Grizzly Man; made for a wild follow up, I tell you.
Huge on the feeling. Big, epic, sweeping emotions and Gold has a nice repetoire of similies and metaphors, pulling them out of her writer's hat as a magician with a rabbit. Fantasy aspect slightly at odds with the realism... given that there are repeated acknowledgements that the bear is wild, dangerous, unpredictable, not human... only for him to be completely domesticated and practically psychic. But then. It's a kids book lol. It's allowed. Still, I suppose the space it occupies between magical realism and stark ecological reality didn't quite do it for me.
I am a touch salty at the "yet another dead mother/greiving father is dense as anything" aspect, but then it IS a staple of children's literature. It's reality for many children, and an anxiety for others.
What I most enjoyed was the atmosphere; all Gold's descriptions; her sense of place and interiority. April's feelings are all so very very FELT. Gold manages to capture all the complicated messiness of April's emotions with a surgeon's precision.
