I’m sure the book has an important message, and the story is probably wonderful for a child to read. I just couldn’t get through it. At the half way mark I got incredibly bored.

The Children’s Book of the Month for April and winner of the Waterstones’s Children’s Book Prize. I had heard good things about this and it didn’t disappoint. It was a heartwarming story of an unlikely friendship between a young girl and a polar bear. I think it highlighted the importance of environmentalism and animals in a way that was accessible to all. The resources at the back were a great idea. The illustrations paired with the text were beautiful. Hannah Gold is clearly someone to look out for and I am interested in reading her latest book, The Lost Whale as she has cemented herself as a solid writer of childrens books.

This is such a special book, its not surprising it won @waterstones Children’s Book Prize 2022. It’s written with 8-12 year olds in mind but I absolutely loved it. It is so beautifully written that it will captivate adults and children alike. Aprils voice shines throughout the writing as she struggles to help Bear but also tries to find a bond with her own father.

The third main character after April and Bear is the environment. The changing landscape and melting ice caps is a worry and theme in the book but the author certainly doesn’t push these concerns in your face.

This is Hannah Golds debut novel and for it capture your imagination so vividly and transport you into the would of April and Bear is such a triumph. I can’t wait to read her second book The Lost Whale.

If you have children then please get them to read or read with them this beautiful book which has the most magnificent illustrations.
