I wasn’t expecting to like this play. I read it for school, and it was assigned yesterday. However, I finished it in a day, and it was amazing. Ibsen was really ahead of his time and I was impressed he wrote these kinds of things, with Nora’s actions and acting independently. I can’t say much more without giving spoilers, but if you ever want to read a play, a genuinely good play, this is only 72 pages (at least my copy), the writing wasn’t difficult to understand, and the ending was mind blowing.
Many call it the first feminist novel. I really enjoyed it. It's short and to the point. The characters evolved dramatically during the play, but in a reasonable way. They're all a mask of what they really are. I appreciate the fact that it treats subjects like independence, freedom, public opinion, etc, but without ever trying to preach us into what is right or wrong. It's the story of a woman finding herself. I think many people who are trying to tell a story that attempts to empower any oppressed group of people could learn a thing or two from this play.
Surprisingly, I really liked this. I liked the commentary on women's roles in society and how the play was written.
