Mixed feelings about this book.

The first quarter was far too slow and I could not rely on the main character at all.
Indeed she is in the shadow of her mother every time they are together and her mother is quite unpleasant, not because she is presented as a bad person but because she is presented as a good one, while being a bad one. The main character is 24, her mother doesn't let her have her own place, make her own decision, work the way she likes or be herself. The mother has non filter, she go out in the street in underwear while insulting neighbours. And one of the first thing she said to the male character is don't touch my daughter when he did no such thing. She is also old fashion and it is something we can see in the main character as well.
On the other hand, after Penny and Emery parted their way with the mother, she was suddenly more interesting, not weak at all and good at decision making, except the moment where she remember the way she was brought up and mess everything up.
Overall, the book was not bad (except the mother issue, taking large portion of the story), it lacked some world building and could have had a better start if more forcused on Penny rather than others we couldn't connect with as we would never see them again. I will follow up on the sequel, as this felt more like an introduction than a first novel of a new serie.

Wow first book of the year and it’s already down the toilet. I made it 40 pages before I was so lost and confused that I had to put the book down.

Absolutely delightful

This is the story about friendship, figuring out who you are, and tapping into the magic. It was so good from start to finish. I cannot wait to see what is next. This is a great heavy-hitter in the urban fantasy genre for sure and contains everything that I love. Found family, learning how to deal with unruly power, and fighting for what's right.

Fantastic start to a new series

After a slightly confusing start, this story really took off. Penny is a truly loveable combination of naivety and wisdom, and Emery ticks all the boxes for a hot but traumatised hero. I enjoyed every minute, and can't wait for the next in the series.

Fun easy read with a special snowflake mc.

It was an easy read and the dialogue gave me a couple chuckles but the main character was a "one of a kind. This leads me to give it 3 stars because I didn't find it super unique.
