funny fast-paced

This girl, it's like she's gone through hell and back
I'm surprised she actually went through all of that and was still sane
Very good book

review to come.

Yet again, I think Rachel Hawkins did a fantastic job ending this trilogy. First off, I like that the story continued where it left off and went straight to the point instead of lingering around the problem or climax of the series. I loved the little twist we as readers find out in the first few chapters of the relationship between Sophie and the Brannicks. I enjoyed that all the questions that I had left off from the last book were basically answered in the first half of the story... for example, what happened to everyone else that was staying in Thorne Abby as well. Of course, I enjoyed that this book brought us right back to the beginning of the series where everything happened... Hex Hall. Although I'm sad to see that one of my favorite characters did not make it through the whole book, I'm glad that the book ended the way it did with Sophie being such a strong character lead. Hawkins did a great job with this trilogy.

Okaaayy.
I gotta say that the whole series of Hex Hall has been... okay. But unfortunately, Spell Bound just didn't finish the series with a bang, like most series do. It kinda ended with a... firework that was supposed to explode but ended up falling into a water puddle. I don't know. I guess it didn't leave me yearning for more.

I kinda got the vibes that this book (and perhaps the whole series) was a mash-up of The Host
Spoilerbecause of Elodie's unusual presence in Sophie's body
, Harry Potter (because of the whole magical thing) and the Infernal Devices Series (because of the whole "villains want power, Thorne Abbey - welcome to our castle place/home for all magic peeps, and
Spoiler we want you to be our leader thing
")And mashing up those these... well, it didn't go down too well, in my opinion. And made the book and the series really bland and indistinguishable.

Too much confusion from Sophie's part, unneeded sacrifices
SpoilerCal dies
, weird reunions, awkward situations and just plain annoying-ness. Or maybe I just didn't quite understand/like our main character, Sophie.

The whole series began quite light-heartedly, but then condensed into something... ick. I wished that some things happened and some things didn't happen in the series.

I reached a lot of points where Sophie just annoyed me and had me mentally yelling at her indecisiveness, confusion and mild stupidity. I mean, who ends up crying when there's some problem that you can't seem to work out? Get over it. Find another way. And most importantly, stop making love interests your main problem. I mean, your Prodigium world is ending, and you cry about boys?? Yes, I had myself questioning in a lot of pages of this book.

Basically, the whole storyline didn't seem to flow right, the character's reactions were unrealistic, the characters were weak... and there was just so much more potential for the supposed "impossible to put down" story. The few things I kinda liked was probably the book covers & best friend Jenna.

After this series (which, by the way, I managed to finish in a matter of a day and a bit - new record!) I don't think I'll be reading much mythical creature biz in a while. Besides Harry Potter, maybe.

SHITTY ENDING awesome book tho

A good ending to the series, I think, with an introduction to characters in the spin-off book. The school part of the story still felt a little forced to me, though. What was the point in the students spending time there? Were they just waiting for Lara to decide to turn them? Getting practice in by torturing Archer? Was it some sort of psychological manipulation, maybe?

The other problem I had was Cal. He kind of felt like some sort of Mary Sue. In Demonglass, we suddenly found out that he was Sophie's betrothed and then she suddenly has sort of feelings for him and he has a bigger part in the story. Then in Spell Bound, he basically acts as a walking Pokemon Center to heal people and gives Sophie permission to love someone else even though he loves her. And then he sacrifices himself for her, giving Sophie some angst and motivation. The bright side, though, is that he has a potential happy ending in his afterlife haunting and healing the grounds of Hex Hall and maybe hooking up with Elodie. Not sure how he's able use magic as a ghost without a body, though. I mean, Elodie could use her magic when she possessed a non-magical Sophie, but I don't think she could use her magic outside of that. Still, a possibly happy afterlife for Cal and Elodie.

I enjoyed it, though. The pacing and plot were pretty solid and I went to look up School Spirits upon finishing it, but was disappointed to learn that it ends with a cliffhanger and there's no sequel in the works.

Spellbound by Rachel Hawkins is the third book in the Hex Hall series. This series follows Sophie a demon. Sophie starts this book unable to access her demon powers and a huge revelation about her family. She soon finds herself back at Hex Hall which has been taken over by the Casnoff's who have evil plans.

This was a good third book in the series. Hawkins does a good job of continuing the story while still allowing it to remain fresh and original. While I didn't speed though the book I did enjoy it. Fans of the series will not be dissapointed.

Appropriateness: There was no adult behavior in this novel. The romance is limited to kissing. I would recommend this series to readers 12+

Hex Hall universe has me intrigued. I wish I could conjure up a few more books from this world.
