all i can remember about this book series is that i liked the way the old books smelled and there was a not-very-nice french doll in it...

It was cute and I loved the idea of two stuffed dolls going on an adventure. My mind could not get around the constant references to Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy by their full names. It was tongue twister in my mouth and in my head. I had to stop. The illustrations were gorgeous.

The Raggedys set out to save poor Babette, the French doll, who, in the book's one scary episode, is stolen from home. The Camel and the Tired Old Horse are charming companions, and the cast of characters--a genuine fairy, Granny (a spider), Loonies, cross-dressing pirates, and others--is pretty choice.

'Raggedy Ann and Andy and the Camel with the Wrinkled Knees' is the first full-length story for the dolls, and the third put out. It has just about everything I could have asked for. On a quiet night when Ann and Andy are left out in the playhouse on the lawn, they hear loud thumps and see a man reach into the nursery window, take something, and run away! They discover that the French Doll has been stolen! Raggedy Ann and Andy go in hot pursuit, but no before remind Henny the Dutch Doll that he is a minor character and has to stay behind to "watch over" things.

A friendly fairy and a spider help them along, but soon they are lost in the woods. Enter the Camel with the Wrinkled Knees. He is just so insufferably cute. He also is gifted with a personality, which, as sweet as they are, the other Raggedys distinctly lack. The Camel actually got me to laugh as he and Andy did a bit while Ann was trying to think of a plan.

The adventure following after the pirate (the big man who stole the French Doll) takes them to a castle, the land of the "Loonies", a lost brother and sister, a witch, more pirates and a Tired Old Horse who is smarter than everyone else in the book. Of course, we do get to rescue the French Doll from those nefarious pirates and find out a few things along the way.

This one has more than a few logic-gaps, but is so charming I'll forgive it anything. Also, I'm again wishing I could post pictures here because I found the sweetest homemade Camel with the Wrinkled Knees and everyone should have one.

When the French Doll is kidnapped by pirates, Raggedy Ann and her brother Andy go to rescue her with the aid of a Camel, a Horse, and a little girl.

Loosely adapted in 1977 into "Raggedy Ann & Andy's Musical Adventure".
