This book and its sequel are my favourite of all the Tintin adventures; whenever I read them, I am immediately thirteen again, home sick from school and lying in bed with Tintin and melted cheese on toast, giggling at poor old Cuthbert losing his temper at being called a goat. And Captain Haddock! He's always been my favourite, but he surpasses himself in sass in this one. Loved seeing the strange back and forth of his relationship with Mr. Baxter here too. "Don't worry, the Captain's just found his pipe..."

Professor Calculus has a plan - Himself, Tintin, Snowy, and Captain Haddock are all going to the moon!
This episode is to be concluded in the next exciting book!

Malgré le caractère un peu lourd des explications scientifiques, je crois que c'est l'album qui me fait le plus rire de toute la série. Merci au Capitaine Haddock d'avoir toujours la bonne réplique pour alléger l'atmosphère!

It's hard to rate this in isolation as it's really only the first half of the story. Still, even for Tintin it stretches the boundaries of credibility. Since when did Calculus become such a renowned scientist? Who in their right mind would let this gang crew the world's first space rocket?
Anyway, the usual tomfoolery and slapstick are present and annoyingly correct (numerous pratfalls by Cpt Haddock seem to be overtaking the ridiculous nature of the Thom(p)sons for sheer idiocy though Calculus amusingly calls Haddock out on his habit of smacking his head). We could probably have done without 4 pages of memory loss hijinks just as the story was getting interesting too.
I think that's what I find frustrating about these books - at it's heart there's a great science fiction romance at play and it's fascinating seeing Hergé's vision of what space travel and the science behind it may be like. There's is some beautiful imagery as well, especially with the machinery and the launch pad splash page. But the inane jokes and slapstick are repetitive and distract from the bigger picture.
Frankly, this could have been condensed with both books combined making a tighter and more thrilling story.
