Brexley is part privileged high society princess and part lethal soldier in this sort of post modern dystopian world where Fae and humans coexist. But not really in Brex’s world. Of course she soon realizes she’s not so lethal as she was led to think when she’s actually amidst the Fae, but she’s got what it takes to be a survivor. Same as the dichotomy of her position, Brex is savvy and street smart half the time, but also makes ridiculously stupid choices the other half. And she’s weirdly naive about human rulers/dictators’ capability for evil, even if she was raised by them. Some of it was just human nature I get it, but I did want to shake her a couple times and yell at her to take her own advice. And Warwick’s.
Okay the author self admittedly wrote Warwick as an ode to Jason Momoa and while I’m not typically a Momoa girlie, I admit the book just feels dry up until the point he’s in the picture. He’s all large and mysterious and grumpy, but his and Brex’s back and forth is half the fun of the book. Their sexual tension is steaming and delicious, and the author gleefully leaves you with severe blue ⚽️ 🏀 by the end of it. I’ve heard this goes on for MORE THAN ONE BOOK, so this slow burn just might unalive me. I say bring it on.
Now I don’t know anything so this isn’t technically a spoiler, but you’ve been warned. If these two aren’t mates, I haven’t been reading enough Romantasy. But we’ll see. Coz it’s obviously not gonna be easy or straightforward, seeing as the climactic events were such a game changer. I already see several bad decisions and impulse control problems in this duo’s future and I can’t help but want to go along for the ride. 😆

The most interesting part of this story for me was Warrick Farkosh and the Hal al Haz prisoners, and even in that we dont get enough of it. That was a great opportunity to expand the world and world building. I wouldve liked to know more about the people /beings in it. I think a better ending point of this book wouldve been them successfully breaking out of prison. I also feel like the parts that were sexy, or attempting to be/convey her desire for Warrick were SO POORLY TIMED. instead of being intrigued they just made me feel uncomfortable.
Moderate: Violence and Murder
Minor: War and Police brutality
The main character in this book is take to prison and has to kill fellow inmates, is made to work in the prison and is beaten up by prisoners.anryuu's review

There is no defined plot or world-building of any kind. It's incredibly confusing and dumps you into the story expecting you to understand everything already. There are occasional mentions of a war and the history of the fae, but nothing definitive enough to help make sense of why things are the way they are.
The story opens with already obnoxious, immature teen angst romance vibes... but it’s an adult novel. Talk about something to make you cringe. I was actually pretty excited about the idea of a friends-to-lovers romance, but yeah, those hopes got dashed almost immediately when it was clear these two would never work anything out because they're both too stupid to actually talk to one another or fight for each other - instead having sex with other people and hiding their emotions.
This book is absolutely disgusting. Like, it made me feel nauseous with the descriptions of gore, sexual violence, and bodily functions happening due to torture throughout. With 60% of it happening within a really awful prison and the other 40% in a whorehouse, things are bound to get ugly... but this was on another level. I genuinely turned green around the gills a few times because of the graphic nature of the book.
Looking for spice? You won't find it here. Not really, anyways. Every sex scene is happening while the two people aren’t even together. They hate each other and can feel one another having sex with other people but they get off on it themselves????? Or something??? It didn’t even make sense. I got so tired of them feeling one another undressing and touching them while they were in two different places. Too weird.
The dialogue (and internal dialogue) was absolute trash. The protagonist was the most “I’m not like other girls” character ever. She constantly talked about how beautiful and strong she was. How self-absorbed can you be, really? Add in the “f-- you,” “you wish” dialogue and it began to read like sloppy fanfic. Just truly terrible.
I plead with you not to read this book.
