I know I'm buying several copies of this book to gift out to my friends and one for myself to re-read. This book is amazing and breaks down several myths about food and health, while being completely respectful to people from different backgrounds and belief systems. I think that if you or someone you know is interested in what changes you/they should do to their diets to be healthier, you should absolutely buy this book. It doesn't tell you "do this and you'll be healthy", it tells you "don't believe people who sell you miracle cures, health is complex and multidisciplinary, your relationship with food is the most important aspect of a personal diet, the BMI is full of shit". I stumbled upon it on accident and couldn't be happier about it.

This book refutes a lot of BS claims about diet and food in a super accessible and informal way. I appreciated that the author explained some jargon in a handy table for us non-scientists.  If you have struggled with disordered eating or receiving unsolicited dieting or weight loss advice I highly recommend it. I'm probably a bit further along in my journey of disentangling weight and food intake from health than the intended reader of this book - nonetheless I enjoyed reading it and learnt a lot!
CW for eating disorders and weight discussion - the author discusses his own disordered eating and attempts to lose weight in quite frank detail in the first chapter of the book.

This gets three stars for having its heart in the right place and I think a good chatty tone for a book that’s an intro to the subject, but I didn’t learn literally anything I didn’t already know so if you are already interested in the science of food and / or the impacts of diet culture, I’d say this is probably too basic for you. And that’s ok! Not every book is written for me

An accessible beginners guide to challenging health and nutritional misinformation. Broken into breif chuncks, the book addresses a selection of the most prevalent diet culture fads in a way that attempts to make the science easy to understand. I enjoyed the strength of Wolrich's voice, and the welcoming and non-judgemental tone of the book.
I would have liked to see more in-depth conversation about the science and nutrition, but but as encouragement for people beginning to challenge their own relationships with food, it's a good introduction which provides plenty of resources for further investigation.

I read this as part of a readathon. It’s a very succinct, easy to digest book full of great information about why diets are bollocks and many of fads you’ve been told about food are lies. As someone who is trying to recover from an eating disorder having the science behind why restriction doesn’t work is so important and I’m so glad Joshua is out there doing the work to dismantle fatphobia.
