Very insightful, I really liked the part on Aging
Starting off strong with The Double Standard of Aging, Sontag paints a vivid picture of a woman’s reality in our society, a picture that has aged beautifully despite having been written over 50 years ago. She continues strongly with her insightful takes on beauty standards and how they shift. However, when her essays shift to focus on fascism and its role in the art movement, this is where my interest shifted away. It did not feel relevant to the theme of the book. After all, it is a book of essays titled On Women. Not On Fascism. While her takes were as insightful as ever, it did not feel culturally relevant in the ways that her earlier essays did. Unfortunately, this pulled my attention away. Nevertheless, I think Susan Sontag’s brilliance shines bright despite the many cultural changes that have taken place since she wrote her brilliant words. If I were to rate this book on the first 3 essays, it would easily have received 5 stars.

I liked some of these essays - and I appreciate Sontag as a thinker and critic, however, lots of this book bored me. I appreciated her notes on fascism, and many of her sentiments but the content was not exciting to me.

She really should have been reading Angela Davis and Black authors generally

her originality results in a mix of ideas, some that I completely disagreed with, but when she’s right she’s so right. Also its just interesting to read her crafted arguments and thinking!! First essay, “double standard of aging” and her published argument with Adrienne Rich were highlights for me
