I loved this book. It felt like a cross between Serpent & Dove and The Bridge Kingdom, both of which are some of my favorite books. I loved both main characters Rune & Gideon and I’m excited to see how the climax of this book shapes them and where they are in the next one.

And I will be making this book my whole personality until the next one comes out.

Ugh! I can see why people only want to start series that are complete. I’m devastated. Kristen, why do you have to mess with my emotions like this? I suppose it makes for a great story. I can’t wait to see how this enemies-to-lovers story unfolds. Until then, I’ll just be crying in a corner, practicing spells to stitch my heart back together.

I figured out the twist early on, but still enjoyed it!

“Scars signaled wealth and rank, most of all, magic.”

Thank you to NetGalley for the e-ARC.

It took me until 20-25% of the book to get into it, which was a bummer. The first quarter of the book was underwhelming, it set the scene but could have done a better job. Rune and Gideon flirting with each other and using each other to their advantage was beautiful! The slow-burn enemies-to-lover vibe of the book was done perfectly! A witch and a witch-hunter that I need to be forever together. I loved how they called each other out on the stereotypes they both had. The side characters were interesting too. The twist at the end set up the sequel decently.

A note on the magic system in this book, you need blood. The blood is technically supposed to be ‘alive’ to be still active. If you are squeamish about blood, cutting/harming oneself, or cutting/harming others then you might not be able to handle this book. I do hope there will be more explorations of the magic system and maybe an alternative method.

I did have a concern that this book would mirror Serpent and Dove a lot because when I first heard the synopsis there were some similarities, but the books just have the similarities that the FMC is a witch and the MMC is a witch-hunter.

This was my Book of the Month pick for February and I truly enjoyed this book. I was able to finish it all in one sitting. The style of writing was solid and I can’t wait for the next book to come out already. I liked the interesting magic system and liked the characters. However, this book is marketed as Teen/Young Adult and I’d say that that’s a bit of a reach. There are scenes with nudity and sex, as well as descriptions of murders, so despite the young age of the character(s) I’d hesitate to recommend this book to anyone under 18. I’m not saying I wouldn’t have read this book in high school, but there should probably be better content warnings.

Again, I really enjoyed this book and I can’t wait for more books in the series. I will be checking out the other books by this author as well!
