I am not a fan of the recent "make every character in your 700-page novel an absolutely disgusting human being" path to Highly Acclaimed Literature. It also makes for very boring books, honestly, since there is actually a limited number of ways in which characters can be horrible. This book is incredibly unpleasant *and* dull.

There's a crass, misogynistic, demeaning sex scene that makes absolutely no sense narratively and just seems to exist for the grossness. There may be more than one but I stopped reading at that point.
