This book was a lot. The building of different characters stories was definitely impressively symphonic. I found myself looking ahead to see when / if characters would reappear. They often didnt which was quite tantalising as many storylines left unfinished. The interweaving was clever as was the darkness with the routine. Overall it was much darker than most books I read, good to try a different genre but a bit much at times. I did like Egil, I didnt like his essay on death - felt a little tacked on and indulgent. The funerals were fascinating, the use of animal life startling, children and adults, excessive alcohol all very evocative.

Definitely Norwegian. Slightly more meaningful if you recognize some of the locations. Need to read the next two to figure out what it all means. Lost track of who was who a bit as the perspectives kept changing.

5 star, this is a great book. But the ending? What?
I’m so unsettled.
I think that’s the point.
I read other reviews afterwards and read two noted comments:
1) It’s a journey, not an ending,
2) It’s absolutely no coincidence this ends on page 666.
Very good overall but the last 150 pages needs a heavy cull. Lots of truly boring rambling that didn't seem important to the overall story.
