I really enjoyed this book. It was a nice light easy read with lots of my favourite things. Magic, unicorns and cute little heroes. Harry Potter-esque vibes, what more could I ask for? The identification of the Weaver wasn’t exactly a huge surprise but I’m hoping that with the second book in the series now announced, the author will delve further into that. I loved Bobby and Mitchell’s characters, but felt like I’d like to see and hear more from Flo and see her character develop in the next book. The way the author describes the island, the accommodation, and the scenery, makes it very easy to picture it and imagine yourself there as the story unfolds. It’s definitely not a five star book and if I could give it 3.5 I would, the only reason it’s not a 4 star book I think, is because I wasn’t so gripped that I was desperate to read it. Took me awhile to get through it for the simple fact that I wasn’t so hooked that I couldn’t put it down.

I was not very interested in the premise of a "chosen one" story, but I can understand that it is a popular setting for youth literature. I thought the insights on mental health were interesting and well included.

However, I felt the book had some several issues. The main character is very bland and washed out.
Most of all, I felt that the author struggled with the tone of the book. This is surprisingly quite a bleak book! The familial and social context of Skandar is awful and the tone of the book struggles to find balance. Everything is gloomy and stressful, and no, a farting unicorn cannot restore balance. I did not feel any ounce of wonderment throughout the book.

The pace didn't work for me. Important parts of the book are resolved too quickly while we delve on some secondary issues for entire chapters.

Also, plot holes.

I really dragged myself to finish this.

2 1/2 stars. It kept me interested enough to keep reading, and I enjoyed the bloodthirsty unicorns
