Simple but great story about a French architect creating designs to hide Jewish people during the German occupation. Really enjoyed the main character and a few of the side characters as well. Easy read.

I thought the writing and character development was a little clunky, but the plot was a page-turner. It's about a Parisian architect during the German occupation of France who gets pulled into helping Jews by designing hiding spots for them. This is despite him being a pretty terrible person.

I love reading historical fiction that revolves around WWII so this immediately attracted my attention. I found it engrossing. Knowing a lot about this time period and understanding why some of characters behaved the way they did made the book more rewarding. I loved Lucien's development throught the story. At first I was a little put off by his general cockiness and egotistical behavior, so I wasn't sure that I would ever really enjoy the book. He slowly redeemed himself. The hiding places created by Lucien were very well described and I had no difficulty visualizing them despite my limited knowledge of architecture. I loved the way the author utilized his love of architecture in the story to make it more palpable and realistic.
