I read this once as a teenager many years ago so this was almost like reading an entirely new Jane Austen novel. A lot of the humour went completely over my teenage head so that was a delightful discovery and I really enjoyed this coming of age story of a very ordinary young girl who learns to distinguish false friends from true ones and the dangers of letting her imagination run away with her. The satire on Gothic novels was great fun but the social comedy and the characters were where the novel really shone. A lighter Jane Austen novel but very much worth reading.

There's a bit early on where Austen quotes from several favourite poems of Catherine's, one of which is Thomas Gray's Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard, and so it became one of my favourites as well. This is really an Austen I want to revisit when I've read Burney and Radcliffe, because I loved what aspects of the Gothic parody I could understand; the middle of the novel is 'standard' Austen, which, since this is an early novel, is something she does better elsewhere.

This has a bit of a darker tone in parts than the other Austen works I've read, and I ate it up. John Thorpe inspired more rage in me than most actual villains.
Catherine isn't my favourite Austen leading lady, and I didn't find the romance very compelling, but I loved the cast of characters, the friendships, and the fun settings.
There were quite a few sarcastic asides and fourth-wall breaks that made the book feel contemporary and like a good gossip session.
