"[…] it is only a novel! replies the young lady; while she lays down her book with affected indifference, or momentary shame. - ‘it is only Cecilia, or Camilla, or Belinda;’ or, in short, only some work in which the most thorough knowledge of human nature, the happiest delineation of its varieties, the liveliest effusions of wit and humour are conveyed to the world in the best chosen language."

- Simply enjoyable. Full of wit and wisdom in the typical Austen style.

More like 4.5 stars. This was absolutely hilarious, and Catherine is so relatable. I love her. I'm reserving my 5 star Austen read for once I've read them all...

My rating has stayed the same from my first read, but I think I may have enjoyed the book more this time, if that makes any sense. It's easily my third favourite Jane Austen novel (after Persuasion and Pride and Prejudice, of course), and I almost wished I had my own copy. Almost, because I'm not sure I have much to say about it.

On first read, the first volume was my favourite, but this time both volumes were equally enjoyable, perhaps because I was ready for the focus to change. The satirical gothic angst felt even better, though less prominent than I remember it being. I also really enjoyed both the romance and the friendship between Catherine and the Tilneys. Yes, the age gap is questionable today, but after rereading Emma, it barely phased me. I do still wish the romance was a little more prominent though, since the ending comes at you quite quickly. I think it's interesting how many of Jane Austen's couples have some sort of basis in emotionally and intellectually developing their partners.

I think this is one of Jane Austen's wittiest works. The narrator is more present in this story than in any of her other works.

it ain’t no pride and prejudice, but she’ll do

You would hardly believe me if I told you everything that didn't happen in this book. Indeed, it was a bit of a nothing book. Austen's writing was witty as always, and in this one especially humorous. But the story utterly failed to compel me, and I am left feeling like I just took a tepid bath.
