Okay, this was so fun! I knew it was kind of a parody on the gothic novels of the time period, but I didn’t expect it to be so amusing! I was giggling through the whole thing.

Catherine was a delightful heroine and I loved her! Henry was funny and their interactions were too good.

After Pride and Prejudice, this might be my favorite Jane Austen novel (although I do still have one or two left before I can decide for sure).

Enjoy my favorite quotes!

“The person, be it gentleman or lady, who has not pleasure in a novel must be intolerably stupid.”

“Her passion for ancient edifices was next in degree to her passion for Henry Tilney.”

“But now you love a hyacinth. So much the better. You have gained a new source of enjoyment, and it is well to have as many holds on happiness as possible.”

The best part of this novel was Jane Austen's sense of irony. When she takes over the narrative from the adventures of Catherine to bestow upon the reader her personal ideas and reasoning for her actions as a writer are very wry and witty. While it was fine to read about Catherine and her Bath adventures, it would be an infinitely inferior sorry if it was penned by a different author.

this novel is surprisingly self aware and jane austin’s comments on her characters made me laugh out loud at times, i almost wish she had gone more gothic and satirical with this novel
