I enjoyed this, although I find I like Jane Austen less than I did when I was young.
The good parts:
- The satire about Catherine as a heroine, expecting a great adventure at every turn and inevitably leading herself into disappointment.
- The humorous dialogue.
- Catherine. She is young, naïve, completely gullible, and still learning to think independently. I found her charming (and at times, frustrating).
My main complaints are just a bit with Austen's general style - characters being a bit one-dimensional, the love story being rushed into more than felt natural in the ending, etc. Ending without a promise of marriage, but rather a hint at its possibility would have felt better to me, at least, considering Catherine and Henry had not seemed to get past anything but mild flirtation.

A silly little book, something I state neither positively nor negatively, in which just about nothing happens. I'm sure a handful of young women of the Victorian era felt very seen by this book and all the more power to them for it.

I originally rated this 3.5 stars after finishing it with my Discord book club, but I feel like it's more deserving of 3 stars.
First and foremost, I don't really understand why this is "gothic". I feel like "gothic" is more of a vibe, and this book didn't feel gothic at all. If anything, it was kind of spring/summer....? Bland
Yeah. It was just bland. Everything that happened was just kinda lame. Catherine's the main character of this novel, but it feels more like she's just a side character.

I forgot to log when I started this story. It was rather uninteresting and predictable. I would much rather read Pride and Prejudice. Jane Austen would address the reader directly from time to time which was unexpectedly different, but I don’t think I will care to read Northanger Abbey again.
I liked it! It’s pretty clear that this is her first book though, it was really good but a bit more childish than other Austen books
