3.5 stars – Better the second time around
On my second read of Northanger Abbey, I found myself appreciating it more than I did the first time. While still not my favourite Austen, it’s certainly risen above Mansfield Park in my ranking.
The novel plays with gothic tropes in a tongue-in-cheek way, but I don’t think it quite hits the mark. The “mystery” elements feel a bit too light-handed, and the satire doesn’t always land. The Thorpes were extremely irritating, and poor Catherine—so naïve and easily swayed—remained a bit frustrating throughout. That said, I now see more charm and humour in the narrative than I remembered.

Kijk, die twee sterren review lijkt dan misschien heel heftig maar het ligt vooral aan mij. Ik kwam gewoon niet door het boek heen en vond het oersaai maar daarnaast volgde ik het ook heel slecht dus misschien moet ik eerst de film van Jane austen boeken kijken omdat ik het vrrhaal dan meer kan waarderen.

Terminada esta historia, debo decir que no sabía si ponerle un 2 o un 3. La historia es sencilla, tiene buen ritmo, consta de momentos graciosos y frustrantes por igual, conectas con los personajes e incluso llegas a odiar a algunos de ellos. (Y tanto que sí). Sin embargo, cuando la historia acaba me pregunto: ¿qué me ha contado? Pero también es cierto que Jane Austen relata historias cotidianas, por lo que realmente cuando lees su novela ya sabes qué vas a encontrar. Así que finalmente he decidido dejarle un 3 porque, aun siendo una narración del día a día, he disfrutado de su lectura y he llegado a querer cargarme a dos de sus personajes. Si un libro despierta mis sentimientos, merece que lo valore. Quizá cuando pase el tiempo y lea más obras de la autora (solo he leído junto a este Orgullo y Prejuicio), podré comparar tramas y baje su valoración. Por ahora, la dejaré así.
Sobre la trama (quizá hay spoilers):
No he llegado a comprender el amor entre Catherine y Henry. Siento que incluso James e Isabella han mostrado más interés amoroso el uno por el otro. Las conversaciones que tenían C y H no me parecían románticas, lo cual me ha decepcionado un poquito.
La amistad de Isabella y Catherine... Es que se veía venir. Por otro lado, la de Catherine y Eleanor me ha gustado muchísimo.
E Isabella y John... Os odio. Un beso.

Silly! I think Catherine is the most relatable Austen heroine, tbh. I, too, was absolutely clueless socially and bewildered by what was going on at all times. (Possibly still true.)

I think I can appreciate this story more the second time around, as I now view it as a coming-of-age story, as well as a typical Austen love story. The first time, I was confused by the choice of Catherine Morland as a heroine and the repeated exclamations of the narrator, either defending or rebuking our heroine; however, now it all seems very natural and such a great choice for Austen.
