I was blown away by the beauty of this complicated story and now I have finished it I long to be back in that world

I listened to this book in an audio format which in combination to my ADHD was hard to understand what was going on. I liked the premise - it was like Midnight Library, meets National Treasure movie, meets an acid trip, meets a Masonic ritual. I would love to try to read this again in the future which a physical copy.

Flip flip flip... Holy crap when does this hot mess of a novel end?!? Ohhhhhhhh I'm only 30% through this?!? Nope nope nope. DNF at 32%

This should have been a collection of short stories and useless Zachary should have been left out. The interim side stories were more interesting than the main plot, if there was such a thing as a plot in this novel.

Couldn’t get into the audiobook. Might try again with a physical copy. The whimsical writing style is nice.

I had heard so many good things about 'The Night Circus', but I am not that into romance so I never picked it up.
When I saw that the same author had written a novel that was more "adventurous" rather than romantic I immediately not only put it on my tbr list but made it my priority to read.
I was very disappointed.

The beginning was promising. It carried this mystery and feeling of uncertainty.
The issue is that these elements were carried throughout the whole book in the worst way possible.

"I remember the space more than the story that went with it but I think the story part had to do with this hidden kingdom" - said a character that did not know what 'The Starless Sea' was, and I felt the same way at exactly 94% of the book.

You are left confused until the very end, but I at least was not curious to find out what was going on (which even by reading the novel fully I didn't understand), I just didn't want to let my first read of the year be a dnf.

Why didn't I give the book a 1 star then?

For three reasons:

1 - The writing is stunning. I had heard a lot about Morgenstern's writing and I was not let down.
One of my favorite things is how she sometimes made sure to describe objects or animals as being unhuman in contrast to this magical world she created within the pages.

2 - I really enjoyed the stories inside the book. The novel is divided into books, and in each book, you have the main plot and some other story being told in parallel. I thought these stories were beautiful and unlike most of the plot, very memorable.

3 - I recognize the originality in the storytelling. The author attempted to create a genius format that in my eyes it was flawed. However, I do appreciate having read something in such an authentic narrative style.
