Having read The Night Circus and now The Starless Sea, Erin Morgenstern's novels have a very similar feel to them, in that she excels above all else in telling stories with a very dreamlike quality to their narration. I liked this less than The Night Circus - the characters in the latter were a bit more compelling to me personally - but enjoyed this enough that I wish I hadn't read it while perpetually a little distracted on the beach this week, and intend to reread it later if I have the time.
A journey...
While I enjoyed the Night Circus more than this book, the story is intriguingly mad, impossible and worth pursuing. Often confusing, I needed to remain focused. This story has a mind of its own!

extremely slow pacing of the main plot (and characters that didn’t interest me that well) that i almost DNF-ed the book, but the stories woven in between the chapters invested me enough that the ending paid off for me. it’s the kind of story that only works in a written book (and not with any other format) and i found myself really glad i pushed through. got me reading back some of the tales after finishing the book itself.

I could not for the life of me tell you what's happening in this book. It started off very well, with a man finding a book containing his story and the stories of many others. But then it quickly falls apart into heady, lofty prose that is meant to sound philosophical and collegiate. The plot is dropped and it's just... prose. 30% may not seem like a lot of reading, but that is 5.5 hours out of an 18.5 audiobook (I would have struggled reading the print version more than I did with this). I wanted to love it. The Night Circus is one of my favorite books, but this one fell so short and couldn't create a world as magical as Night Circus'.

i don't think this is fair for me to rate this book because i know that i am not the target audience. I try to read fantasy from time to time even though i am not the biggest fan and this one confirmed my taste.
