"Be brave. Be bold. Be loud. Never change for anyone but yourself. Any soul worth their star-stuff will take the whole package as is and however it grows."
Oh. My. Wow. This is kind of like a mix between 'Every heart a doorway' by Seanan McGuire and 'The binding' by Brigit Collins (both i recommend reading). With it's own unique flare of magic and story telling of course!
I was pretty reluctant to read this as I didn't enjoy The Night Circus but the cover is to die for. From the description it sounded right up my alley so I made it one of the first books to read in 2020.
Let me tell you, it doesn't disappoint. It's so beautifully written with an amazing story line that skips between other short stories (that are contained in a book the main character is reading) and the main story line.
The characters are amazing, its modern and whimsical, I could imagine the Starless sea in my mind and it was utterly heart warming. The writing style while at first wasnt for me, grew on me very quickly.
There was tears and wonder. My life is better for reading this.
Please give this book a go.

I finished The Starless Sea and it was, interesting, daydream-like, complex, and incoherent.
The story follows Zachary to start, and his journey getting wrapped up in discovering the origins of a mysterious book that leads him to becoming entangled in a world of secret society and underground libraries filled with all sorts of impossible things. The story quickly becomes much much bigger as additional books and stories take over the narrative through interludes and vignettes between chapters. Soon we’re following (or trying to) many more characters and trying to figure out how they fit into the plot. There are characters representing fate and time and characters that seem like only characters of stories within the books in the actual book but are actually actual characters in the actual book… it’s a lot.
I enjoyed it a lot at certain points but overall I’ve been life thinking it’s really incomplete. So many threads were woven together and so many of them were just left frayed and swaying in the wind with no discernible point or resolution. This book isn’t really about a coherent plot and it also does not include and character growth so I was wondering what we were left with. There was a lot of beautiful prose and very interesting ideas that will appeal to daydreamers and story lovers because who among us hasn’t wished at times that the stories we read with all sorts of impossible things and people and abilities were real? Maybe the author wanted an open ended mysterious vibe, but it didn’t make me feel giddy to receive a big plate of nothing at the end and I didn’t feel what others feel about this being a “love story” so there just wasn’t much to really hold on to at the end for me. Just more questions than answers, which may be the point, but wasn’t satisfying to me. So, I liked it and was entertained and intrigued, but the ending didn’t land for me.
***side note: the overt references to real life books was supposed to be nostalgic but didn’t work for me bc HP is such a jump scare. In a book about fake books why did we have to remember the real world?
