Ok so i'm really conflicted about this book. I absolutely adored the short stories they were my favourite part, however the overarching plot with zachary fell flat most of the time and definitely lowered my overall rating

Slightly more detailed review to come when i get time (which might be a while cause i'm really stressed due to school)

A beautiful blend where reality meets fantasy until you can no longer tell them apart.

I finished this last night, and I'm still conflicted in my review ...

This is an amazing, beautifully written book. It is magical, poetic, and lyrical and full of symbols and story arcs. It is a skillfully woven tapestry full of beautiful colors and surprising combinations. I want it to be the book that I hug to my chest and sigh. The book that I press into the hands of every reader I run into and say "You must read this!"

This isn't quite that book.

The tapestry is heavy, although the weight isn't apparent all at once. It is also loosely woven with incomplete borders and incomplete pictures. The book passes like a dream, one that you can't quite remember all the details when you wake up.

I would love to dig into this book in a literature seminar and tease out the loose threads and trace the symbols, color coding and cross referencing.

I am glad I read this book and look forward to discussing it with my book club. I think I would feel more let down about the story and the ending if I didn't have people to share it with.

Very rarely do I find a book that makes me sob all through the final chapter - both out of deep love for the characters as well as deep sorrow that I was leaving them and their world behind. The entire novel is a love letter to stories, both their birth and their continuation, as well as the people who keep them alive. Morgenstern manages to create a dreamy, mystical, unbelievable world that for all its impossibilities manages to feel intimate and familiar. Perhaps what makes me saddest is that I will never get an opportunity to read it for the first time ever again….which, in my opinion, is a very special way for any book to make you feel.
