i sincerely regret wasting so much reading time on this. It has been a long time since i met a main character whom i disliked so much. There is nothing redeeming about his actions or the way the book just meanders along

I should have never watched Jojo Rabbit because then I wouldn’t have liked the movie enough to want to read this book. This book was a mistake. I should have dropped this book halfway. Biggest reading regret of the year. 2 stars because the first half was okay.

another disappointment lol the movie was so much better

(I think I’ve landed on it being a 3.5 for me)

If you, like me, came here from seeing JoJo Rabbit then we both were likely very surprised!

This book is much darker and somber than JoJo. It asks the question, what is Love? While showing what love obviously is Not in definite terms.

Without spoiling the story I would just say that this book is a very sad tale of someone caught in his own lies and the consequences of those lies on everyone around him. It will not leave you feeling good, it might leave you feeling thoughtful, it will show you how desperate “normal people” can be in war time stress, and it will show you how not to love someone.

I sort of think it's unfair that I'm comparing this to JoJo Rabbit, but wow did Taika Waititi deserve best adapted screenplay. This is TOTALLY different from the movie; way darker, characters a lot more screwed up and unlikable, and an entirely different theme. It was okay. I wouldn't have picked up this book without the movie and I think I would have liked this less without the movie.

1.5/5

Just a head’s up: from what I can tell from the Jojo Rabbit trailer, that movie is thematically different from this novel. I got this book making the assumption that they’d be closer but wow. I was quite mistaken. My bad.

This is a very serious literary fiction novel about manipulation, not a satire. I shouldn’t have assumed.

Not my cup of tea but you might enjoy it.
