I don’t think this one will be my favorite of the series and i think it’s the switch from book one’s already beloved characters’ plot line to book two’s switch to only new characters, who, although interesting in their own right, would have been better introduced (imo) alongside the ones i was already familiar with so that i would’ve had something pulling me back into it and keeping me entertained (totally unrelated: i missed Teraeth and Tyentso so goddamn much).
I think losing the double timeline narration might have slowed me down as well since it was one of the reasons i loved the first book so much, but it wouldn’t have thrived a second time i guess. And also i’m not a huge fan of the “people-as-horses” talk lmao so the beginning dragged a bit.

Regardless i stuck with it and it did get better or maybe i just got into it, but anyways I enjoyed it (especially the ending!!!).
I can’t wait to read the third one now that (i hope) everyone has been introduced and it can start moving forwards and the real fun can begin!

A great follow up to The Ruin of Kings.
This book introduces a whole host of new characters and a new area of the map.
I really enjoyed the look into how gender and sexuality work in Jorat compared to the rest of Quur. Janel's whole story was a very nice departure from Kihrin's and tying of the two together was great.
Also I very much enjoy Relos Var, he's a really fun villain character.

This book introduced us to a new culture which I personally enjoyed. This new culture is well thought out and I enjoy how it empowers females without forcing it down the reader's throat. We slowly see more of the world that Lyons is creating through exploring characters in more depth and introducing other mythical beasts too. I enjoyed how this book raises philosophical questions that I can relate to and I felt that the characters were not choosing between right and wrong paths but moreso are choosing between wrong and less wrong paths. I feel a good fantasy book has to have some twists and turns and Lyons delivers on this front too.
Highly enjoyable. The dueling narratives mesh much better in this one and it doesn’t suffer from the same pacing issues as the first book. I also enjoy the new cast quite a bit.
My only real issue is that there are mechanisms in place, both in the narrative and the world building, that kept tension pretty low throughout. I felt slightly cheated by obvious fake-outs a couple times.
Still, looking forward to Book 3!

3 and a half stars. Definitely a slower book and very anticlimactic. But, overall I enjoyed the alternate story and how everything, and everyone, came together at the end (not much unlike the first book). A lot of unanswered questions that I hope are addressed in the next book, which is another year away
