This is not a perfect book (and I can't seem to muster up the energy to give this statement to proper due it deserves), but it is wholly entertaining and worth the months and months and months I ended up putting into it. Its greatest effect was to leave me wanting very much to visit India. Definitely recommend reading it, but do be prepared for it to perhaps leave you believing the author not a little self-indulgent.
Fascinating insight into the his life, with lots of memorable characters and funny moments. I was massively engrossed in this book and didn't want it to end. It starts as what you think is a man on the run but becomes more about the human spirit and endurance in tough times. You can watch Lin's personal growth in character and worldly understanding. Defiantly one of my all time favorites!

Die Geschichte von Lin (Shantaram) ist unglaublich spannend und vor allem die Liebe zur Philosophie und die daraus resultierenden Dialoge haben mich sehr gefesselt und zum nachdenken gebracht.
Die gewalttätigen Szenen sind zwar hart, eklig und abstoßend, lesen sich für mich aber dennoch sehr faszinierend, da er die Gedanken in solchen Situationen sehr gut mit teilt.

Thoroughly enjoyable read, a little slow to start but picks up the pace and fluidity later in the book and the style develops to make for a great tale of the underworld in India.
One of my all-time favourite books!
This massive tome was allocated as the summer read by my local book club. I had not heard of it previously, but I am so glad that I read it! I know when I am on to a good book if I find myself reading it during the day while my children play, or taking it in the car when I am a passenger. I just had to read this whenever I found time. The prose is delightful, with a wonderful feast of words that delight the senses. And the author really takes you into his world. I have never visited India, and I know very little about these distant countries, but now I really want to visit after reading Shantaram.
I will not give too much detail about the story, because I could write a whole book just discussing the narrator, the text, the themes etc. Suffice to say I feel a huge sense of achievement for reading the book because it is huge, and I enjoyed every word. None of it seemed excessive, or waffling, which I have found in previous large novels. The only negative I can offer is the sheer volume of characters and sub-stories involved. They did cause some confusion, but ultimately this story will stay with me for a very long time.
