I really enjoyed reading these classic stories by Arthur Conan Doyle. This complete copy is a really great format for the stories - and the originally illustrations add something particularly special. As I've been told many times, my mom read our copy when she was pregnant with me, and it has sat on our family bookcase ever since. After seeing the recent Guy Ritchie / Robert Downey Jr. Sherlock Holmes film, I was inspired to read the full collection of stories once and for all.

The stories come in such volume that they start to blend together quite quickly... but the journey of watching Holmes work, listening to Dr. Watson's admiring narration, and seeing each mystery come to a satisfying ending time and time again does not get tiresome. Holmes is quite an amazing character - he, in fact, gets quite little characterization. What really surprised me was how little the great Professor Moriarty enters into the picture - he was only in ONE short story! And I thought he was the ultimate nemesis to our detective hero!

My lasting impression from the collection of short stories and Hound of the Baskervilles (which I particularly enjoyed)... was that Doyle, as the mastermind behind such great fiction, had a mind to match his witty hero. In order to think of all the small things that Holmes observes and have a brilliant idea for what they might mean, or to put all the clues in front of you without letting you figure out the story... That takes a brilliant mind.

Overall, BRAVO! I really recommend this classic collection.

To start with - don't let the horrid dust jacket stop you from picking up this book. Underneath is a beautifully bound and illustrated book!

The stories are all the classics with the original illustrations. With the exception of the Case-book and Last Bow, it has every story - plus Hound of the Baskervilles. It is a complete collection in my mind.

For those unfamiliar to Sherlock Holmes, the stories are excellent. Can the plot lines be figured out by the reader? Yes, I would say a majority of the time I can pick it out (Doyle is no Agatha Christie). The real treat is seeing how Holmes makes his deductions and discovers the clues. And of course, the mysteries are just fun!

I started reading Sherlock Holmes, well, okay, my mom started reading them to me, and I was pretty young at the time. I didn't like Hound of the Baskervilles at that age, because it was too scary, but I was fascinated with Holmes, and the massive amount of details he could observe and process with so little effort. I'm still fascinated by it--age has not diminished the stories' charm. In fact, now I have a richer appreciation for all that the stories include, not just the details. definitely worth the read, if you haven't read them yet.

It seems fitting that I would finish this three year endevour of finishing this book on the same day I am finishing my three years of working at my library job. I got this collection book from my grandparents' attic after they died and we were clearing the house. It has taken since May 15, 2015 to finish this. But I finally did it! I have to say I liked everything that came after Reichbach Falls. The return of Sherlock stories were more entertaining then the earlier stories. I finally got in the swing of reading them. Even though they were not made too long ago, the English is a bit different and the newspaper styled format feels like it takes forever to read each story. But nonetheless I finally finished! Hazaah!
