Nach zehn Jahren habe ich es nochmal gelesen, nachdem ich auf Teil 2 gestoßen war. Und ich finde es immer noch genauso gut wie damals.
Die Idee ist, wie ich finde, sehr aktuell und die Ausarbeitung ist klasse gestaltet. Ich mochte es sehr gerne, Nick auf seiner Reise durch Erebos zu begleiten, obwohl ich manchmal über ihn schon die Arme über dem Kopf zusammengeschlagen habe.
Ich denke, "Erebos" ist besonders auch für Gamer geeignet oder Leute die sich für Computerspiele interessieren. Die Spielewelt, die in Erebos dargestellt wird, ist sehe realistisch und erinnert mich auf jeden Fall auch an das eine oder andere Spiel, nach dem ich schon mal süchtig war.
Starke Empfehlung! "Erebos" regt zum Nachdenken an, ist spannend erzählt und hat liebenswerte Charaktere, die man am liebsten direkt selbst kennelernen möchte.

So, I live in Austria and over here a few years back exactly this book was one of the biggest and most hyped things (at least at my school), people who you would not even believe to know what a book is were all of a sudden obsessed with it.
Still somehow I still never got around to read it, this may be because it was never in the library (like I said literally everybody was reading it), or because I just never was really into video games.
So now a few years later as expected all the thrift shops are overflowing with it.
My local one has a great offer on books, (2 euros for a kilo) so when I saw a completely new copy I decided to pick it up see what the all the fuss back then was about (one of the weirdest things in this story is that I never actually got spoilers for the book).
So here we are. And well… I think I would have enjoyed it back then, at least a little bit. This is absolutely written for a younger audience and I think for that it is quite alright a little bit farfetched which I guess is kind of the point of it but absolutely not something I enjoyed. Very interesting that a book about a highly addictive video game was so highly addictive even on the third read that I couldn't put it away. Much to think about.
There were some things that caught my eye in Nick's character that i didn't really notice before that were quite yikesy (yes Nick we get it, it's really important that you're friends with a black dude and you also think your friend being disabled would be worse than him being dead but that's fine), but i guess you can't expect a teenage jock narrator (with a ponytail) to be the perfect example of Wokeness™ 24/7.
To be honest, I do take issue with the fact that the book was set in London.... I don't know, it just seemed sort of unecessary to me, it could have been set in literally any bigger German city and would have made perfect sense. It's just weird reading German expressions and slang that you know an English person would never use and that probably don't even have a good English translation, in a book that's supposed to be set in England. But overall, that didn't really take away from the story.
I also would have liked to have a bit more focus on the repercussions afterwards.... I mean you have this huge amount of teenagers that have just lived through a super weird, for some people traumatizing event, and I just would have wished for a little more closure for everyone.
Also, please protect my little gay son Adrian McVay at all costs, he didn't deserve any of this

UPDATE 11.06.2020: Da die Autorin transphobische Äußerungen von sich gegeben hat bewerte ich das Buch mit einem Stern weniger. Es lässt mich daran zweifeln das wirklich nur ihre Charaktere fat shaming Äußerungen von sich geben, nach den transphobischen Äußerungen glaube ich stark das die Autorin sich hinter ihren gemeinen Charakteren versteckt.

Ich hatte mich wirklich sehr auf das Buch gefreut. Der Klappentext klang so spannend, ein Computerspiel das in die Realität übergreift und den Spielern verrückte und gefährliche Aufträge erteilt. Es klang ein bisschen wie Nerve mit Emma Roberts.
Ich fand sehr schnell in das Buch rein, die Charaktere waren mir leider alle ziemlich unsympathisch. Fatshaming, Sexismus und Mobbing waren Dauerthemen. Gerade beim fatshaming war es wieder typisch, dass das dicke Mädchen auch gleichzeitig gemein und böse ist. Sowas kann ich einfach nicht leiden. Das die Autorin die Charaktere auch gezwungen Teeniehaft gestaltet hat und mit einem Möchtegern Teenie Slang versehen hat, tat ihr übriges dazu.
Den Auftrag den Nick, der Protagonist laut Buchrücken bekommt, passiert erst ab Seite 300! Davor die ganzen Kapitel waren gähnende Leere. Das ein Buch zu 2/3 so langweilig ist, das ist schon fast ne Meisterleistung. Es dümpelte alles nur so rum. Nick war im Spiel, hat ein paar Monster gekilled und sich aufgeregt das er ganz dringend einen Wunschkristall braucht. Er ging in die Schule und jedesmal ist das gleiche passiert. Er hat gerätselt wer welcher Charakter ist, hat das beobachtet und ging wieder nach Hause. Und das 300 Seiten lang!!
Ich war wirklich kurz davor das Buch abzubrechen, wollte aber wissen wer dahinter steckt, welches große Ziel verfolgt wird. Die letzten 200 Seiten haben mir so viel besser gefallen. Der Bezug zur Realität wurde greifbar und das große Rätselraten ging los. Der Showdown war für mich ganz gut und die Auflösung fand ich auch in Ordnung aber der Weg dahin war leider echt anstrengend und mühsam.
