due back at library. Would consider loaning again!
What a great perspective on reading and the world. Also it’s nonfiction by a Filipino author. I want more of that!!

I like what this book was trying to do, and appreciated parts of it, but it was written more like a literary Ph.D thesis than a book written for the average reader.
I wanted to hear her ideas but couldn't get into the writing style. The sentences were very long and used vocabulary that made me feel stupid. There was also so much anger radiating in the pages - which is completely fair - but makes it even harder for me to absorb the information. This is the kind of book that would require me to look up definitions/people/outside information while reading and that's not what I'm looking for right now
This is such a great read. Makes me want to read her novel and about half of her bibliography so I can re-analyze the way I read.
Disagree with her about Didion and Steinbeck but I’m not a California writer with California histories at my feet. (Also, I think she focuses on an early and limited reading of Didion, ignoring much of what happens with/from Didion later.) Anyhow, that’s my one qualm. The essays in this book are fiercely intelligent and powerful, and confrontational. Anyone interested in the work of decolonizing should read this. It’s probably not most will expect it to be, though. It’s certainly not what I thought it was going to be. (At first I was irritated, but then the book was too good to be bothered by the sorta bait and switch title. It is what it says it is but not in the way most people think it’s going to be In other words, don’t take the title superficially.)
