Oh Tade Thompson DID THAT

CW: gore, animal gore, violence and murder

THIS WAS INCREDIBLE.

I’m utterly astounded at how much Tade Thompson was able to cram into so few pages! This was a compelling concept that effortlessly blended medical horror, mystery, and spy thriller elements, with a deliciously ambiguous ending that’s equal parts satisfying and maddeningly vague.

Molly’s character development and complexity is inconceivable for such a short tale. She’s easy to connect with in spite of her complete emotional unavailability and utilitarian approach to relationships, and watching her grow from naive child into boss woman was epic.

It’s been weeks since reading this and I am STILL thinking about it.

It’s that good.

I thought this was striking and scary as a novella, but it concluded feeling a bit incomplete. As much as I loved the entire middle section as a story of Molly and the other mollys, I felt like the framing device for the novella itself was a bit weak and it made the entire thing a bit unbalanced. But overall, if you’re looking for a super creepy, quick read, I would still recommend this one.

Wow, I loved this book. If it were longer, it would have been perfect.

I loved the premise (what's scarier than evil doppelgangers? I'm here for it.) but the book never...expands on it? Goes beyond what the reader immediately pictures when they hear the premise? Or, at least not until a little bit at the very end. For example:
Spoiler My first thought, and probably a lot of peoples first thought (at least half of the people who read it, right?) was "what about her period?" but when that happens it's supposed to be a surprise...? (Neither of her parents, who in every other way are super on top of this shit, think to even warn her about that?)
So the book is grim and gory but just holds that one emotional note the whole time and, even as a novela, becomes boring. The author could have cut out the frame story,
Spoiler unneeded explanation for her condition tacked on at the end (was there any conceivable reason for her mother to not just tell her that at any point before then?)
, and all the times characters are allowed to ramble on about their pretentious interests and reading habits, and made it a really good short story instead.
