My complaints with this series are feeling repetitive now - it's annoying because I genuinely think the premise, the characters and the plot are good. They're just not great and it's frustrating because they could be and the author is absolutely capable of it too. I'm not sure if this is because she's trying to improve pre-published works and this just isn't how she would have written these now but there is both something continuously pulling me back to this story and something continuously irritating me about it.
We again see more of the world of Scion in this book - this time, Paris. Paige, Arthur's, Nick and Anya Maria have all been recruited into an undercover intelligence network. Naturally we still don't have Nick's, Anya's or a London POV all of which would have REALLY added to the pacing and suspense.
We do see a wonderful version of Paris, but every plot point felt like it was recycled from a previous book and I found my self listening like "of course Paige, I know what you're gonna do, I also know how you'll miraculously survive" and that's not the sign of a series that's keeping it's readers fully engaged. It also gives no room for any real character development which is frustrating too.
There was a point I though we had managed to hit upon a big twist that I would have been ALL IN FOR. But don't worry, it all gets taken back a few chapters later 🙄
And yet, am I about to start the next book? Absolutely. The world building is excellent, I'm attached enough to all of these characters to be invested and yet again the blurb of the next one tempts me with a potential new side to this world.

After my re-read (4 years later now) I can say that I forgot almost everything - there were a few scenes that stuck with me, but that did not help at all to prepare me again for this book.
As with the others, the story contiues where we left of with the previous book. Paige is in Paris with Arcturus, trying to recover from the torture she went through in London (in order to destroy Senshield and protect the Mime Order) and to find new allies with the Parisian syndicate.
I forgot how fast she actually goes into the tunnels beneath Paris and meets the grand ducs.
It was a rollercoaster once more and having read all four books in quick succession now I am in awe of the story that is spun and the different threads that come together or start to emerge. I can't wait to see where this is going.
One little point though: While I still love that French is woven in so seamlessley, it still left me a bit wanting. I don't really understand French (beyond the most basic phrases) so the different names of the Parisian syndies as well as some of the sentences that were only French remained a mystery to me.
______
A very good continuiation of this series!
Although I had my problems with the French (I can just about speak/understand a few rudimentary words, so most of the sentences went over my head), it was still realistic in the way people who speak more than one language switch back and forth.
I don't really know what I expected but I sure as hell did not expect where this book went and was going in the end. I am still in shock about the last two chapters and the twist and turns thrown our way - some of which I almost thought may happen but never really predicted head on.
While I was constantly shouting at Paige in my head that she definitely had it wrong, it was so believable how she came to that conclusion. As a reader I knew what would be going on, as Paige I suffered that stark turn right alongside her.
Now my only question is: what did I just read?!
