I genuinely don’t know how to separate this book from the rest of the series anymore. It’s all starting to blend together. Sure, Paige is in a new location, we meet some new faces, and the plot technically moves forward. But at its core? It’s the same tired cycle: Paige gets betrayed, beaten, and disrespected while crawling through yet another emotionally and physically exhausting mission.
Every two chapters, someone gets kidnapped. Every three chapters, Paige is half dead. Every five chapters, she’s crawling to someone’s feet, begging for scraps of dignity. And by the end of the book? Nothing is resolved. At all. Just another location, another trauma, and a rinse and repeat cliffhanger.
This entire series has become a blind box of villain of the week and trauma tropes. And don’t even get me started on the pacing, plotlines drag, emotional beats repeat, and somehow we’re still calling Paige a revolutionary leader when she’s mostly getting dragged around like a chew toy.
And I'm not afraid to admit it, I skipped The Song Rising. And I honestly felt like I didn’t miss anything, that’s a problem. If you can skip a whole installment of the series and still understand the latest book, the arc is broken. You need to wrap the series up TODAY!!!!
Honestly, I don't longer care about Paige’s goals because the series clearly doesn’t either. At this point, we’re just watching her survive, not lead. And the worst part is there are still two more books be ng written. Samantha Shannon please wrap it up, I beg!

Second (2023): I... somehow forgot how traumatic the last one hundred pages were. I just want to scream at Paige this whole book

Well written drama - a little bit repetitive in the fighting and being taken prisoner but I still want to find out how it’s all going to happen.
