This started out ok and then went completely off the rails. There is no contemporary romance in the world that needs to be over 350 pages. And the chapters?! Why am I 20% into a book and already on chapter 50? There is no need to start another chapter just so we can switch POVs for two sentences. It’s so stilted and annoying. You can change POVs within a chapter, trust your readers, we won’t get lost.

Another great book from S. J. Tilly! I really wanted to punch Sterling in the face in the beginning of the book. He really came around, and the character growth on both ends was great to see. There were times I wanted to cry along with Courtney. There is a very light stalking theme but I wouldn't really call it a stalker romance. I cannot wait for the next book in this series!

This is my first book by S. J. Tilly, but it won’t be my last. I have no idea why it took me this long to read one of her books, but I’m glad I finally did. I love her writing style: short chapters that get straight to the point, with absolutely no unnecessary filler or repetition.

The story starts with Courtney showing up at Black Mountain Lodge prepared to begin her temporary job as a maintenance worker. When she meets the owner, Sterling Black, he is ready to send her packing because he was expecting a guy named Court, not a curvy woman who is a huge distraction. However, she needs this job, so she isn't going to let him scare her away.

This is a long book, over five hundred pages and about two hundred chapters (some are only one page long), so when I say this is a slow burn, believe me. It takes a while for them to get to the point where they are doing things to one another that they had only previously been thinking about. But once they do get there, the hotness factor jumps to scorching.

I recommend this book to readers who enjoy SPICY Contemporary Romances, Age Gap Romances, Workplace Romances, Curvy Girl Romances, Forced Proximity Romances, or Small-Town Romances.

Happy Reading!!!

Have you read Hans by S.J. Tilly? Because if you take Hans and you turn him into an idiot who owns a mountain lodge, then you've basically got Sterling. šŸ˜‚ But we also got the vibes of that book here, too. And I loved it. Obviously VERY different kinds of stories, but still, same vibes that I loved. I don't even really know how to explain it, but I kept getting reminded of that book while reading this one.

WARNING: Don't look at the chapters. There's a name in there that might give some things away, so don't peak if you don't want that. But if you're curious like I was, there are 201 chapters in this book (including the epilogues).

I still don't know how I feel about all those chapters, personally. I think that's a big reason why this story didn't reach five stars for me. Don't get me wrong, I didn't hate it. I just didn't love it. I know some people like shorter chapters, and I don't mind them, but a lot of these chapters were rapid fire. We were switching POV's every few paragraphs. Did it work here? Yeah, sure, for the most part. But it's just not my favorite way for a story to be told.

Two things about Courtney's character: First, she's not as big of an idiot as Sterling, but she certainly has her moments. And second,
I hated that she didn't question him on page at the end over Dale. I feel a little cheated by that resolution. I wouldn't expect her character to harp over it, but I would have at least liked a comment specifically about the mix-up from her or Sterling. Some kind of acknowledgement before they move on forever.

Also, that synopsis? Literally the first two chapters. Have fun on this wild ride.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. These kinds of stories always have me wanting to pick up my life and go live in the mountains.

I had plans today. Had being the key word in that sentence, because I could not put this book down. FMC Courtney really stole my heart with her quirkiness, resilience, and her quiet strength. Following her journey and seeing her find her home—not just in Sterling’s love but among the whole crew of Black Mountain Lodge—was so heart-warming. And whilst MMC Sterling throws a few red flags in the beginning, he more than makes up for his more… questionable behaviour by being the swoon-worthy man that he is beneath his gruff exterior as Courtney chips away at the guards he put around his heart.

Look—at this point, I think it’s well known that if S.J. Tilly writes it, I’m going to read it. After devouring every single one of her stories in a matter of months in 2024 (and re-reading a few since), I’ve been eagerly awaiting this new Mountain Men series. Hell, it was on my wish list before ANY details were announced, and my bestest book bestie can attest to my all caps excitement when I found out I was lucky enough to be picked for an eARC. But regardless of my being a keen Tilly-verse reader, S.J. absolutely smashed it out of the park with this one. And whilst it didn’t emotionally wreck me in the same way that the Love Letters series did… well, I almost added a few more tears to that ā€œreaders’ tearsā€ cup she owns towards the end there. This novel has just the right amount of feels, humour, spice, and swoony goodness—and I can’t wait to see where this series goes from here.
