Listen up, this book is incredible. I knew Monique Roffey was a talented writer, but this is her best work yet. This is a masterpiece. It’s a heart-breaking, gritty, powerful exploration of female empowerment and social justice.

Four women spark a revolution on a Caribbean island after one too many femicides. A Japanese steel pan player is found dead beneath a cannonball tree, and it sets in motion events which will transform the lives of everyone on the small island.

This book is complex. We hear from people at all levels of society, of all ethnicities, of all orientations. There are sex workers and journalists and forensic scientists and politicians wives all calling for better rights for the women on their island. For an end to the violence perpetrated on them which is never solved.

What I loved about this book was how it took you inside the movement, showed you how a small memorial can spiral into a grassroots movement. The #AmINext movement that our protagonists kickstart echoes that of the #MeToo movement. It felt powerful to read this fictional uprising, it fills you with a fire to go out and make change.

And the ending 😱 I will not spoil it, but I couldn’t believe there were no pages left. It was haunting and yet the perfect way to end the story.

If you haven’t yet read Monique Roffey’s writing, you’re missing out on some spellbinding work. Passiontide was released yesterday - so there’s no excuse not to go out and get your hands on this book.

Thank you to instabooktours, Monique Roffey and the publisher for this gifted copy in return for an honest review. Honoured to have had a part in the #Passiontide tour ❤️

"In fact... what you are saying is that is us, we women who need to make sure men don't... rape us?" ~ Monique Roffey

Passiontide is one of those books that is both hopeful but also bleak. It strips bare the experience of women trying to highlight and fight the epidemic of male violence. It demonstrates misogyny infiltrates all of society from women with internalised misogyny to brothers, husbands, the man on the street and the men in power. It is an important book in my opinion

I loved the female characters in this story. Tara, Sharleen, Gigi and Daisy. All very different women but who in the end come together in some form to lead a rebellion as the seek fundamental real change within their Caribbean community. I loved Gigi the best, there was something about her that just draw me to her.

I won't go into the plot too much as it would be impossible to do without a ton of spoilers but it reminded me the Sarah Everard demonstrations and the hope we have all felt at times that stuff like that will spark real change.

The ending of the book is however brutal as it shines a light on how hard change is and really got me thinking about how these things keep happening and there is talk for a while, some vague policy shifts but then nothing, until the next time... the next one... the next women.

3.75 stars. A hard but necessary read. Such an important book and so timely. I think the author did the incredibly hard job of managing so many POVs and personalities while giving the book a consistent and powerful message. I struggled with the pacing at around 50%, it loses steam a bit. But this was very solid.
