A wonderful BookBub novel which I never would have found if I was not a member. A superb story of friendship, breaking down social and religious barriers, love stories, gender bias, bigotry and crushing down equality barriers. A novel that highlights current times when women’s rights are so prominent. It shows you just what can be achieved if you try hard enough and don’t give up. Never give up!!!! Equal rights for women, equal pay and the importance of ensuring our children respect one another.

Passiontide by Monique Roffey is a beautifully crafted novel that delves into the heart of Caribbean society, exposing its deep-rooted machismo and misogyny. The story is brought to life through a vivid and colorful cast of characters, each playing a vital role in driving forward the plot. Their interactions are rich, and their unity in pursuing long-overdue societal change adds a powerful, resonant layer to the narrative.
In the quiet morning after the carnival Sora Tanaka, a young pan player lying under the cannonball tree. She is not a local woman but people seem to know her as the Japanese tourist who can play the tin pan as good as a local. She’s been murdered brutally. But she is not the only woman who has been killed in the St Colibri Island. A group of women come together with the purpose to make Sora’s femicide, the last one.

Roffey’s lyrical prose enhances the slow, deliberate pace of the novel, allowing readers to fully immerse themselves in the emotional and cultural landscape of St Colibri. The story’s impact is undeniable, and its themes of resistance, resilience, and the fight for equality linger long after the final page. An evocative, thought-provoking and necessary read.

Too many characters and jumped perspectives constantly. Felt like they lacked depth. Long descriptions of the protest often repetitive. So many mentions of how intersectional the protests is but in a way like the whole book that seems message over story. The investigation of the crime getting nowhere. During a very cliched scene
between the PM’s wife and the Japanese family of the victim
I had to give up. Shame as I loved her first book so much.

This book was very intriguing. I enjoyed the premise of the feminist movement.  I wasn’t expecting the book to be quite as horny as it was, but I should’ve considering the sex strike lol. But overall this book was very interesting and discusses a topic worth considering.
