DID NOT FINISH: 15%

I just didn't find it interesting, not my kind of book. I was trying it out to expand the number of non-fiction books I read but I think I'll stick closer to fiction for a little while longer.

A great collection of cursed (not haunted!) objects from throughout history. I particularly liked the latter half, where Ocker discusses a number of cursed object collections and some fun, modern entries. Ironically, some of the items in the 'isn't considered cursed but probably should be' section were my favourite, and I see why Ocker was willing to stretch to include them. The illustrations by Jon MacNair were all great as well.

Like in The United States of Cryptids, Ocker maintains a skeptical tone without being a complete buzzkill, which is definitely my preferred approach to urban legends. Sometimes the book got a little bit of repetitive—a lot of the curses are just 'someone (vaguely) related to the item died for unconnected reasons'. But that, of course, isn't Ocker's fault; I'd just recommend not binge reading this one.

This review is uncharacteristically short because I just don’t have that much to say about this book. There’s plenty of interesting stories, but also many which I wished were more detailed. It’s fun and enjoyable, but not particularly memorable. I am glad there are pictures, but wish they were photos. Overall totally average, there's nothing bad about it, but nothing exceptionally good either. An ok experience.
