. The book starts with a slight time-skip, but it's ok. I read 3.5 before this one, and I think that you should actually do the opposite. The reason for this is that because I read 3.5 I 

Knew that a specific 'serial killer' was a nice guy.

. 
It would be interesting to read the two at the same time, like, switch to 3.5 after 

the withered is dead or captured

. 
This book is back to being mostly plot-driven as 

John doesn't have a girlfriend anymore

. 
I liked the new characters introduced in the book, but I'm also quite satisfied with

them all dying
