this is the first book i remember finishing in one sitting. i cried so much, i felt so much, i grieved with those two outstandingly normal girls and for myself and my janus faced father. i tried to learn about their culture and their differences and to learn about the difficulties they face to not take my priviledge for granted, but i know i am pretentious even in trying to do so. i loved all these strong yet weak women in this book, the hippies and healers and beauticians and doctors that stood up for each other and faced the world. i loved the ending. i loved the depiction of this strange, flawed father and how he was so deeply human in everything these girls told me about him. i am devastated but also happy. i should read about grief more often.

I’ve never felt so deeply connected to a book than I do with this one. There were so many similarities to my actual life that, at times, I had to stop and breathe through my tears. I loved reading this and it’s an easy 5 stars from me

Man, Elizabeth Acevedo's books just get better and better. This one was especially poignant for me.

It was a nice, fast listen as an audio book. The book handles loss and disappointment but is not sad. I wish I hadn't read anything about it before reading it.

love books about dark family secrets. it’s so daunting having to deal w mourning someone while also discovering they aren’t who you thought they were. for as long as this book was, it couldn’t been even longer. i feel like there’s still so much to touch on with these characters that i’m interested in reading about.
