I FINISHED IT!! Okay buckle in because this is a long review. After being incredibly disappointed by Iron Flame, this one was wayyyy better in comparison. In contrast to Iron Flame, this book actually felt like it had something going on, with a clear purpose. When I don’t overthink it, yes, this was a very fun book. I liked the quest element, I liked the side characters, and I liked the twists. But when I actually think deeply about all those things, I’m like, wait. It’s actually not very well done. Let me elaborate:
1. One major thing I enjoyed in this book was not hating Violet and Xaden for once. I liked that the whole premise was Violet doing whatever she can to save Xaden. But then, when I think about it, what did she ACTUALLY do?? Not that much tbh. And then, like halfway through the book when they find out there is no cure, I was like oh okay what now? Because RY marketed this book in such a specific way that did not match up with the majority of the book. Also I’m bored with Violet and Xaden. Even though I wasn’t annoyed with them as much, I am bored. Yawn. Give me more
2. The story was FUN! I was into it! But right when I would start to really enjoy the story, it would occur to me, wait, what’s going on? Where are they now? Why are they here? How did they get here? Like it’s just so much going on and RY didn't do enough to remind the reader what was going on. And part of me is like oh my bad I guess I wasn’t paying attention. But no actually that’s bad writing if you’re doing nothing to help refresh your reader on what’s going on. This is what I mean, like when I didn’t overthink it I was into it! But then I would try to connect everything together and just get lost man
3. The characters are great, but also who the HELLLL are half this people? Rebecca, respectfully, I do not want to have to check the Empyrean Wiki every other chapter to check who every random-ass side character is. It’s too much to keep track of! This goes back to the fact that she needs to be better with reminding her reader who tf these people are or at least differentiate them somehow plssss
4. Girl if there’s one thing that can redeem a book for me it’s a TWIST! I love me a twist and some of these hes me clutching my pearls. But, same story, when I would take a step back and be like hold on, I would realize that the twists were completely out of left field most of the time. Like oooohhhh big whoop, she’s dedicated to Dunne I guess and yes that’s been hinted at throughout this book but RY made no mention of it in the previous two!! We didn’t even know that was a thing! So like why should I care actually? Same for all the other twists man, they were all either overly predictable or shocking but also out of nowhere completely
5. Bruh. The end. I was expecting a cliffhanger, duh, but RY did entirely too much with that ending because now I’m pissed off!!! I’m not invested enough in this series to read theories or anything, so the effect that it has on more casual readers like myself (especially when I couldn’t keep track of what was going on half the book) is that I’m just annoyed. Like…. Okay??? And WTF is the next book going to be like? Oh whoop dee doo time to go find Xaden AGAIN ugh. A quest to find the secret 7th breed of dragon? Love! A quest to find Xaden who is now an UGLY VENIN (side note RY: you shouldn’t spend so much time talking about how ugly venin are and then turn your sexy hunk MMC into one of them, just a tip) is just not interesting to me
6. Also, I was so annoyed with the vague language throughout this entire book. As if we’re supposed to deduce who the random “her” “him” “brother” are??? NO just tell me who you’re talking about! I don’t care about building suspense or getting the shock factor I just want to know what’s going on
In conclusion 3.5 stars is generous for this but I cannot tell a lie, I had a blast
