Onyx Storm brought better pacing than Iron Flame, but only by a feather.

It seems to be a trend with Yarros that her books finally develop their momentum about three quarters of the way through. I think that is a sign of a rushed editing process, and an author that perhaps shouldn’t have committed to a five book series from the outset.

The changing POVs in the last 100 pages was so jarring, I almost DNF’d right there. If you’re gonna to multi-POV, commit to it from the outset! If we hadn’t spent so much time in the middle of the book, we might have had enough word count to better approach the chapters where Yarros felt the need to go to other POVs.

The saving grace of the entire series? Ridoc and Andarna are literally the best and I would die for them.

Now that we’re past the middle book, hopefully there will be better pacing and some of the gaps in the story and lore can be properly addressed.

Wow this book was a rollercoaster. Loved to see more of some characters like Aaric and Ridoc and also discover more of the world the book takes place in. The book stretched out a little too long in my opinion. We got some answers we waited for but honestly I have more questions now then before. Waiting for book 4!

Unfortunately, this story chose world building and having far too many characters over having an actual plot. I wish each book felt like its own story that’s connected to the larger story rather than it feeling like we’re 1,500 pages into one story with no end in sight. Nothing really happens in this book, and then a bunch of confusion is thrown at you at the end in order to keep your interest in wanting to read the next installment. I enjoy this world, but Rebecca needs to get to the point eventually.

The character development in this one is stronger than in previous books—the motivations felt more complex and grounded. I’m also impressed that Yarros hasn’t let to any swift solutions come about for Xaden. That said, a friend of mine told me once that the difference between fantasy and reality is that fantasy villains are wrapped up into a single, defeatable object rather than spread unevenly through the hearts of your neighbors. That said: I truly hope that Yarros wraps up this series while addressing threats that extend beyond the venin. (I mean. . .there’s the abuse in the school in and of itself that should probably be looked at.)

Like the other books in this series, this book kept my attention and occupied a fair space in my brain. The world building is heavy in this book and I really like the hints and call backs throughout the story. I think Violet is slightly less annoying in this book but I am personally just annoyed that she is often the smartest character to put things together that would otherwise be super obscure, and then the next page be so naive or delusional. I’m aware that she’s a young 20’s cadet thrown into a massive rebellion and war effort, but I just wanted to shake her during some instances.

I did really love the continued character development of the secondary characters and I love them all. Quest squad, squad mates, I love my found family. I also really appreciated a few different POVs in the last chapters.

I often forget this is Yarros’ first series in fantasy and am trying not to hold it to such high standards as I am hopeful the next installments will be even better. I just think that the mix of modern slang in a fantasy book breaks some of the immersion.

I felt like this book had SO much going on that a lot of things that could have been really amazing just fell kind of flat for me. The expanded world building was so fun and interesting, but we hardly got to spend any real time in any one place to actually feel immersed or connected to it. Some side characters really gained more depth to them, while others seemed like such an afterthought that I forgot they were even there. The mysteries that I loved to theorize about in the earlier books felt convoluted; there’s just so many of them and you receive so few answers that it just feels unsatisfactory. So many new ideas and mysteries were introduced that felt disconnected from the earlier books, like it was just becoming unnecessarily complicated. The structure of this book followed the structure of the first two SO closely that it never gave me the same sense of adventure and tension that I loved in the earlier books, since it felt like I had read it all before. Even the writing itself didn’t feel as quality. The series has always relied heavily on dialogue, which in earlier books felt fast paced and engaging, but this one felt so dialogue heavy that I never felt really immersed in the actual settings it was taking place in, which was especially challenging when there were so many new settings being introduced. All of that being said, I will absolutely be reading the rest of the series.
